Carrigaline United 1 – 0 Ballincollig
For the second time in the space of a week Ballincollig came away empty handed from Turner’s Cross in a Cup Final. In a very evenly matched game the league champions scored in the dying minutes to do the double.
Ballincollig started the stronger and should have scored when Niamh Coughlan was through on goal but a moment’s hesitation enabled the chasing centre-half to make a last ditch tackle. Ballincollig were comfortable at the back but couldn’t make their dominance count up front with a tendency to over carry the ball meaning no real chances were created.
Carrigaline started stronger in the second half and enjoyed a few chances but Ballincollig used their interchange subs well. As the game progressed the feeling grew that one goal would be enough to win this game and cruelly for the team in green it was Carrigaline who got it. A mistake at the back let the striker through and the power of her shot was enough to beat the keeper and secure the double for the league champions.
Ballincollig can be proud of their performance and should look to the future as a competent display gave the feeling to anyone watching that this won’t be their last trip to Turner Cross.
